Family Papers, 1880-1976 (bulk 1910-1956).

This collection contains the personal and business papers of E.H. Butler, Sr., E.H Butler, Jr. and Kate R. Butler. Mr. A. Kirchhofer had hoped to write a definitive history of the Buffalo Evening News (BEN), and had culled what he considered to be the most important materials from both E.H. Butler, Senior and E.H. Butler, Junior collections (before they were sent to the Butler Library). The history was never published, and the materials were sent to the Butler Library shortly after Mr. Kirchhofer's death, in 1987. Rather than attempt to replace the materials in each collection, it was decided to leave it as a separate series in the collection. The collection consists mostly of correspondence and subject files, but it also contains photographs, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, awards and certificates, family films and video cassettes, Butler Mansion inventory and house information (including appraisal and photographs of the furniture, paintings, and tapestry), materials collected during business trips to Europe, and materials saves from social functions, memorial cards, deeds, various pieces of family memorabilia, BEN cashbooks, ledgers, journals, financial statements, income tax returns, brochures for machinery, stocks and bonds, files on WBEN (radio and television stations), drafts for chapters of the unfinished history of the BEN and Butler family.
